We Did It Again, Another Record Collection!
- Brooks Bennett, WSALC Board -

I want to offer both thanks and congratulations to the letter carriers of Washington State on the wonderful results of our Food Drive on May 12th. Although the drive may seem like a long time ago when you read this, please remember that in many places the food you collected in May is still helping hungry families in August. More than two and a quarter million pounds of non-perishable food is astounding! It's an increase of more than 25% from last year, and something that each of us can be proud of. Ask your local food bank, they'll tell you how much difference we make. Great feeling, isn't it?

I apologize for not having this report in the last newsletter; in fact the Editor kindly agreed to hold the paper for two weeks after the deadline. At the end of that time however, we just didn't have reports from several places where I knew for sure that they'd collected food. So we decided to hold on and have a more complete report for you at this time. I'd like to encourage everyone for next year; please call your results in to our Washington State hotline as soon as you're done counting. That number will be published in this paper well before the Food Drive on May 11, 2002. We'll also arrange to have an e-mail address to send in your results if that works better for you.

I'd also like to thank the other postal employees and others who help us do this good work. Clerks, mail handlers, supervisory employees and especially rural carriers in many places make a significant contribution to the total. In fact, as you'll notice in the list below, almost 5% of the food reported comes from places where there are no city carriers. Please remember to thank all the people who participated in your area, families, Auxiliary members, retirees and all the other volunteers. It's all of us working together that makes the largest one-day food drive in America so successful. Time to start on Food Drive 2002!
